Meet Alishan Merjanian
Your child's Suzuki piano teacher in the Beaverton and Portland area.
A Teacher Who Cares About More Than Notes
I started playing piano at age five, and music has shaped every part of my life since. I studied Classical Piano Performance at San Jose State University, where I fell in love with both the instrument and the art of teaching. Later, I pursued Music Education coursework at Portland State University, deepening my understanding of how children learn.
My training in the Suzuki method has been the most transformative part of my teaching journey. I've completed certification through all seven levels of Suzuki piano instruction with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. The Suzuki philosophy resonates deeply with me because it views music education as character education. Dr. Suzuki said it best: the goal is to "nurture noble, sensitive human souls."
Every student is unique. Some come bursting with energy, others are shy and cautious. I meet each child where they are, building confidence alongside technique. Parents are essential partners in this process, and I make sure you feel supported and equipped to help your child practice at home, even if you've never played a note yourself.

Teaching Philosophy
I believe every child can learn music, just as every child learns to speak their native language. The Suzuki method follows this "mother tongue" principle: surround the child with music, create a nurturing environment, and let ability develop naturally through encouragement and repetition.
In my studio, lessons are structured but never rigid. We work through the Suzuki repertoire at a pace that respects each student's development. I emphasize beautiful tone from the very first lesson, teaching students to listen deeply to themselves and to the music they're creating.
Beyond technique, I want my students to develop discipline, patience, and the ability to express themselves. These are skills that extend far beyond music and serve children throughout their lives.
